The Jakarta Provincial Government is taking extra precautions against the possibility of tidal flooding, which is expected to occur at the end of March 2025, coinciding with the Eid holiday season.
"W e are taking precautions starting today,"
Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung, revealed that a special meeting has been held to anticipate the tidal flooding.
"Yesterday, we held a special meeting to anticipate the tidal flooding, which is expected to occur around the 28th, 29th, or possibly the 31st, right around Eid. Therefore,
we are taking precautions starting today," stated Pramono at the South Plaza of Monas, Jakarta, on Tuesday (3/25).Jakarta Speeds Up Embankment Construction to Mitigate Tidal FloodTidal flood prevention efforts will be focused in several northern coastal areas, such as Muara Karang, Muara Angke, and Jalan RE Martadinata.
Pramono hopes that the anticipatory measures will minimize the impact of tidal flooding and ensure the safety and comfort of residents during Eid celebrations.
"Thus, residents can go back to their hometowns, but we will maintain adequate protection for the community," he asserted.
Several tidal flood anticipatory measures have been prepared by the city, such as installing gabion walls in flood-prone areas, preparing and activating water pumps, and raising embankments in several locations, especially in Muara Angke, by 2.5 meters, which will be carried out after Eid al-Fitr.
Additionally, the city will soon repair several leaking embankments at various points.
"After Eid, we will raise the embankments in several locations, in accordance with agreements with the residents. In Muara Angke, we will raise the embankment by 2.5 meters. We decided this yesterday," he said.
Besides addresing short-term tidal flooding, the city also plans to carry out medium-term and long-term developments in Muara Angke. These will be carried out in line with the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) sea wall project. The Jakarta Provincial Government will work on the embankment section that spans 11.2 kilometers.
"We will carry out the improvements together, not working individually," he mentioned.
